Oklahoma specialists comfort, care for children with health issue

Specialists in Oklahoma are providing comfort and care for children with health issues.Child life specialists are people who comfort and care for children who are dealing with serious health issues. KOCO 5 heard from a mother who said the specialists have helped her son adjust to life with heart issues.”He gets so excited when they walk into the room especially if they have one of the dogs with them it just completely brightens his days,” said Mariah Johnston, Elliot’s mother.It brightens a child’s day who spends an enormous amount of time in the hospital, at a doctor’s office or in surgery. Elliot has had a medical team since he was born.”Elliott was diagnosed in utero with congenital heart defects so my OB back home in Tulsa sent us here and this became our home away from home,” Mariah said.At 4 years old, Elliot has already undergone eight surgeries and ten months in the hospital altogether.“This is our home away from home. We’ve spent months at a time in this hospital, away from our home and family,” Johnston said.His Child Life specialists have been a saving grace to him and his family, and a much-needed resource for his survival and recovery.They also provide relief to overwhelmed and exhausted parents.”They come and sit with him so I can step out and grab a bite or take a shower, have a break,” Johnston said.Elliott’s story can’t be told without introducing one of his Child Life specialists, Jocelyn Giertz. She feels that bond attachment to the family just as they do to her.”I am really lucky because of my job in the hospital. I get to help feel kids feel more normal while there are here at the hospital,” Giertz said.If you ask her about Elliot, they have quite the story.”So, Elliott and I get to play a lot together. We do a lot of things that help make the hard things feel a little bit more easy,” Giertz said.In this case, it is good work by great people who uplift the smallest and youngest of hospital patients.”We recognize the child life specialist and the work and celebrate,” said Erin Bailey, the director of Child Life & Therapeutic Programs at the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.
